Mixing Your Tracks. Pro Mixing Engineer Secrets – Why Your Mixes Suck Part II

Mixing is the most mysterious part of any record.  Every engineer has there own secrets and tricks of the trade. When i began my internship at NY’s famous Soundtrack Studios many years ago I was blown away by all i learned. After twisting many knobs doing gear recalls for top engineers and seeing what a real record industry mix look liked I began to notice a lot of the same patterns from engineer to engineer. Some of the techniques and philosophies will help you mixing skills tremendously.
SSL Mixer

Mixing Secret #1 – Stop turning knobs and listening. Mixing engineers spend more time listening to the mix then they do twisting knobs, and adjusting effects. You should be spending alot more time listening. An average major label mix can take any where from 8 to 24 hours or more. Most of this time is spent listening to every small detail looking for problems and ways to solve them in a creative or corrective way. Listen on big speakers, small speakers, headphones and even in the car.

Why Your Mix Sucks And How To Fix It Part I

Why Your Mix Sucks And How To Fix It Part I

The questions I get asked the most always have to do with mixing. Why does my mix suck? What am I doing wrong? In the next few blog post I am going to talk about why your mix sucks and what you can do to fix it. First and introduction to the mixing process.

If you are new to making beats, producing or recording eventually you are going to have to do a mix of your music. What is mixing? Mixing is when you take all the different tracks of audio and or midi and combine them together into some sort of file that normal people can hear on there stereo, ipod or computer. Usually this would be a stereo wav, aiff, or mp3 file. The wav and aiff file can then be burned on to a CD. The mp3 file can emailed, posted on your myspace page or website, and uploaded to your ipod or other mp3 player. Mixing is the final place for you to make changes to your music and fix problems.

What about mastering you ask? Mastering is for the people who do mastering. The point of mastering is to take a collection of music, put it together and make it sound consistent, and press it on a CD. There are certain things that can be fixed and or enhanced during the mastering phase of a project but these things should be done for the sake of consistency. Just to be clear… If you think there is something that needs to be changed, or fixed in your music the last chance you have to do is during the mixing process. That is why it is so important.

Now that you have a basic understanding of what mixing is and why it so important lets move on to the hard part. Why your mix sucks?  Continue Reading

The Piano Playing Cat Gets Remixed

The piano playing cat makes his orchestra day view?

He is not Susan Boyle but he is taking the music world by storm.  With the days of record companies and albums behind us the music industry continunes to search for its soul.  This isa great piece of music with really talented people behind it. My hats off to the composer. And while it is really cool, we should also be asking our selves is this where real musicians should be left to find work anf create music? Are Julliard applicants dreaming of someday being the producer for some fat cat or remixing youtube videos?  I’m sure Simon Cowell is in talks with Cat concerning a manegment and record contract.  On a positive note maybe this will at least end the Autotune craze.

Please. I want to hear every ones thoughts on this.

The Classic Drum Machine Samples You Must Have

Drum samples are at the heart of every producers sample library. With out the right drum sounds your beats will not have any punch.

Before the days of endless sampling time, hard drive space and DAWs hip hop producers made beats with drum machines. Drum machines were pattern based sequencers along with a set of drum kits or drum samples. The producer would program the drum sounds in step mode and then use MIDI to sync the device with other synths and recording devices. Drum machines were made by all the big companies including Roland, Korg, Akai, Yamaha, and Casio and more. As time went on the line between drum machine and sampler begin to blur more and more.  The samples in these drum machines have been used in countless hit records and still be in every producers sound library. These are the must have Drum Machine Samples, most of them can be found on the internet since they are sold old. Read More of this beat making article at DrumsAndSounds.com

Making A Dr. Dre De Tox Jus Blaze Style Beat

This is a quick video of a studio, beat making session. This beat took about 30 minutes to build. The beat has a bit of a Dr. Dre sound but then gets a bit more Just Blaze with the Tom Fills. When I sit down in a session and start working on beats I spend alot of time looking for the right sound. I might get an idea for a string part and try the same part with 20 differnt string sounds before i find the just the right one. One of the big mistakes I think new producers make is not getting to know there sound library and their plugins. Some very big records have come from the Garage Band factory sound library.

A Good sound library of Drum Samples and Drum Kits is the Step Ya Game Up Kits. You can get them at Drumsandsounds.com
